HIGH
SCHOOL RENOVATION
Pleasant
Plains, Illinois
The
use of 1-1/2 inch Commercial Size TracPipe inserted
through PVC pipe in pre-existing ceilings enabled the
heating contractors to complete this job in about one-third
of the time allotted. The PVC was hung with standard
pipe supports to enable installers to leave drop ceilings
largely in place during the HVAC upgrade portion of
the Pleasant Plains High School renovation.
The
piping job was originally specified with welded steel
gas pipe. The Jacksonville, IL heating contractor was
approached by the TracPipe distributor, in Springfield,
IL, who offered TracPipe's 1-½ inch size flexible
gas piping. TracPipe's commercial sizes are available
up to 2-inch. This size range coupled with 5-psi pressure
normally available from gas utilities allows flexible-piping
upgrades to replace low-pressure rigid gas pipe sizes
up to 6-inch.
The
ease of running flexible pipe and elimination of welding
provided a reduction in man-days from 28 to 10. This
enabled the heating contractors to finish up their tasks
and proceed to other scheduled work.

The engineering firm participated in the decision to
permit the use of TracPipe. Replacements of this type
are based upon a determination that TracPipe meets or
exceeds Plumbing/Mechanical code requirements for steel
pipe. Corrugated stainless steel tubing is recognized
in codes throughout the United States. In several instances
it has received statewide approval based upon code amendments
where Plumbing Codes have been slow to change.
