AQUARIUM AND THEME PARK
Long Island, NY

At the eastern end of Long Island, NY where the Peconic River empties into Great Peconic Bay and then to the Atlantic Ocean, you will find a legendary transformation underway. An ordinary building materials warehouse is being turned into an undersea-lost city adventure complete with a 40-foot diameter Shark Tank and other live aquarium exhibits providing entertainment and educational opportunities for families and for school children.

There is resurgence nationwide in building and renovation of aquariums and other theme attractions. Often there is a need for natural gas both for heating and for special effects. You will find TracPipe at the center of many of these projects as contractors seek cost effective, safe methods for piping these one-of-a-kind designs. Commercial contractors are constantly under time pressures and need the assistance that TracPipe flexible gas piping gives.

In order to provide the necessary heat to complete the interior portions of the aquarium during Long Island's unpredictable winter weather, the heating contractor had a very narrow time window for gas piping. The three large rooftop units on the main building required 1 ½ inch and 2-inch pipe for the gas loads. Black iron pipe for this job would have put the project weeks behind schedule.

The 50-foot height of the main building in the aquarium project would have presented major problems to the gas-piping contractor if he had chosen to use black iron pipe. The weight of 4-inch pipe exceeded the capacity of the existing roof. Any piping system, which was not supported by the roof, would have seriously affected the appearance of the underwater-lost city theme. The biggest challenge for the contractor was welding the rigid piping and lifting it to the roof.

With TracPipe specified for the aquarium project the contractor's problems were solved. Elevated pressure gas was requested from the Long Island gas utility. The 4-inch black pipe was replaced by 2-inch flexible TracPipe, which weighs a fraction of rigid pipe. No welding is required with TracPipe, which was supplied to the job site on 150-foot reels. The scissors lift was only utilized for a couple of days to finish the connections to the rooftop units. Weeks would have been required to lift black iron into place.
